Been to the Gallows is an independent local music project, currently consisting only of Mike James (who performs all strings and vocals) and Shelby Lieffring (who performs drums).  While the band doesn’t identify with any particular genre, they have been called folk-rock, blues-rock, and even western-style rock.  The duo is most often compared to the White Stripes and the Black Keys.  Their current release, A Knock at the Door, is available at Underground Sounds.

Both James and Lieffring grew up on the outskirts of Louisville, Kentucky.  This upbringing has resulted with a profound cultural influence on the style and subject matter of their music.  For example, their song, “Amitola”, was recorded at the site of the Long Run Massacre of 1781, and tells the story of a Native American victim of the tragic event.

Fans of local music will recognize Mike James as the guitarist and singer of The Pseudo-Saints, a now disbanded hard-rock group known best for their EP entitled Grendel, and their song, “I’m the One Who Wrote the Letter”.
